U.S. Silk Product Imports from China in Jan.-Oct. 2021

1. Silk products imported from China by US in October

According to the statistics of the U.S. Department of Commerce, the import value of silk products from China in October was 125 million US dollars, up 31.73% year on year, and down 10.07% month on month, accounting for 37.66% of the global imports, a slight drop from last month.

The details were as follows:

Silk filament: imported from China amounted to 370.5 thousand US dollars, up 651.27% and 251.52% from the previous year and month respectively, accounting for 38.93% of the market share, ranking the first in the sources of imports again. The import quantity was 67.68 tons, soaring 6432.63% and 3247.08% from the previous year and month respectively, with the market share of 89.15%.

Silk fabrics: imported from China amounted to 5.6835 million US dollars, down 28.91% and up 21.64% from the previous year and month respectively, with a market share of 26.45%, ranking the first in the source of imports.

Silk madeups: imported from China amounted to 119 million US dollars, up 36.97% and down 6.08% from the previous year and month respectively, accounting for 38.44% of its market share.

2. Silk product imported from China by US in Jan.-Oct.

From January to October, the U.S. imported 1140 million US dollars of silk products from China, up 21.01% year on year, accounting for 32.82% of its global imports. Among them:

Silk filament: imported from China amounted to 2.9852 million US dollars, up 264.45% year on year, with a market share of 31.88%, ranking the first in the import sources of silk filament. The import quantity was 182.96 tons, an increase of 653.53% from the previous year with a marked share of 65.03%.

Silk fabrics: imported from China amounted to 50.233 million US dollars, down 7.17% from a year ago, with a marked share of 26.21%, ranking the first in the import sources of silk fabrics.

Silk madeups: imported from China amounted to 1087 million US dollars, up 22.50% from a year ago, with a marked share of 33.21%, ranking the first in import sources of silk madeups.

3. U.S. import situation of silk products with 10% imposed tariff from China

Since October 2018, the U.S. has imposed a 10% import tariff on 25 Chinese silk products classified in 8-digit HS codes, including 1 cocoon, 7 silk filaments (actually containing 8 10-digit HS codes), and 17 silk fabrics (actually containing 37 10-digit HS codes).

3.1 U.S. import situation of silk products with imposed tariff from China in October

U.S. imported 1.0275 million U.S. dollars of silk products with 10% imposed tariff from China in October, down 58.24% and up 155.79% from the previous year and month respectively, accounting for 18.11% of the marked share.

The details were as follows:

Cocoon: zero imports from China.

Silk filament: imported from China amounted to 370.5 thousand US dollars, up 651.27% and 251.52% from the previous year and month respectively, accounting for 38.93% of the market share, ranking the first in the sources of imports. The import quantity was 67.68 tons, up 6432.63% and 3247.08% from the previous year and month respectively, with a market share of 89.15%.

Silk fabrics: imported from China amounted to 657 thousand US dollars, down 72.75% and up 121.73% from the previous year and month respectively, accounting for 13.91% of the marked share. The quantity was 840 thousand square meters, a drop of 70.87% from a year ago.

3.2 U.S. import situation of silk products with imposed tariff from China in Jan.-Oct.

From January to October, U.S. imported 8.2277 million U.S. dollars of silk products with 10% imposed tariff from China, a year-on-year decrease of 47.43%, with a market share of 16.15%, ranking the second after India. 

Among them:

Cocoon: imported from China amounted to 5500 US dollars, with a market share of 100%.

Silk filament: imported from China amounted to 2.9852 million US dollars, an increase of 264.45% year on year, a market share of 31.88%, ranking the first in the import sources of silk filament. The quantity was 182.96 tons, an increase of 653.53% YOY, and a market share of 65.03%.

Silk fabrics: imported from China amounted to 5.2369 million US dollars, a decline of 64.69% year on year, and its market share continued to drop to 12.59%, ranking the fourth in the import sources of silk fabrics. The quantity was 707.4 thousand square meters, falling 78.82% from a year before.
